NC golf finishes 2nd in WPIAL

Smithco fires 77 for Trojans; Freeport, Knoch volleyball still undefeated

Madie Smithco shot a 77 at the Gold Course at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon Thursday to help the North Catholic golf team to a second place finish at the WPIAL Class AA Boys Team Championships.

Brendan Haggerty shot an 81 for the Trojans, who shot a 428 as a team.

Sewickley Academy won the title with a 406.

Todd Hangliter pitched in an 80 for Seneca Valley.

Fox Chapel won the title with a 386.

Mackensey Jack had 10 points, three aces and seven kills to help Freeport sweep Burrell 25-15, 25-14, 25-18 on a night when her sister, who died in 2017, was honored.Kadyn Jack died when she was a freshman at Freeport from a sudden illness.Tori Radvan added 10 kills and eight points and Maddie Clark had 27 assists for the Yellowjackets (12-0, 10-0), which also sewed up its 15th consecutive section title.Lauren Lampus had eight kills and 11 points and Sam Clark 10 points, five aces and six kills.Hempfield 3, Butler 2 — Taylor Welter had 28 kills, but the Golden Tornado lost a heartbreaker 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 11-15.Ava Carney added 24 kills and 14 digs and Hailey Metzger added 39 assists and 16 digs for the Golden Tornado.Moniteau 3, Forest 0 — Aslyn Pry had 11 aces and four kills to lead the Warriors to a 25-9, 25-19, 25-6 victory.Ivie Scot added six aces and four kills, Samantha Broerman six kills and two blocks and Logan Barnhart 13 assists and two aces.Knoch 3, Ambridge 0 — Kennedy Christy had 16 kills and Skylar Burkett added 13 kills as the Knights won 25-16, 25-17, 25-14 to stay undefeated at 15-0 overall and 12-0 in the section.A-C Valley 3, Venango Catholic 0 — Andrea Meals had 13 points, 14 digs and eight kills as the Falcons rolled 25-9, 25-13, 25-15.Mia Sherman added 10 kills and Tarra Stefanacci 17 digs and seven assists for A-C Valley (12-1).Clarion 3, Union 0 — Dominika Logue and Drew Davis each had three kills in a 25-22, 25-7, 25-14 loss to Clarion.Slippery Rock 3, West Middlesex 0 — Annika Peale had 10 digs, 10 service points, five kills and three blocks to pace the Rockets in a 25-9, 25-10, 25-12 victory.Lexis Prementine added 13 digs and five kills, Taylor Balint nine digs and 22 service points, Virginia Recchia 28 assiss, 10 digs, Becca McCandless 12 digs and Tiffany Madison six kills and four blocks for the Rockets (6-7).

Ryan Davey scored two goals and Ian Balquist got the game-winner with 2:18 left as Slippery Rock (13-3, 9-0) clinched the region title with a 3-2 win at Bradford.Freeport 4, Leechburg 0 — Isaac Wetzel, Hunter Hardin, Justin Kriess and Christian Warnosky each scored a goal as the Yellowjackets concluded their regular season with this win.Kriess and Waronsky each scored their first career goals for Freeport (9-3-2).Mars 3, Knoch 0 — Austin Rocke scored a pair of goals and Dane Beller also found the net for the Planets (14-0-1).Karns City 13, DuBois Central Catholic 0 — Dakota King scored five goals and Nate Rondinelli and Owen Collwell each had a pair in this Gremlins’ rout.Kaden Scherer, Chase Beighley, Robby Rumbaugh and Nate Boyden also scored for Karns City (15-1).
