Grid guru Scoop no longer has room for error

Well, I have my work cut out for me.

Last season, I lost just 14 games.

This year, I already have 14 losses.

It just hasn't been my year.

But I have faith. Faith that I can go unbeaten this week and continue that trend for the rest of the season.

If I pull that off, it will be one of the most amazing feats in prognostication since Joe Namath guaranteed a win in Super Bowl III.

On to the picks:

— The Golden Tornado have had a sparse roster for much of the season. They should get some of those guys back this week.North Allegheny, though, is rolling and played superbly against Seneca Valley last week.It adds up to another tough night for Butler. North Allegheny 43, Butler 10.

— The Raiders are coming off a disappointing game against North Allegheny last week.I can't see Seneca Valley struggling again this week. Seneca Valley 31, Hempfield 17.

— Can anyone stop Teddy Ruffner?North Hills will try this week. They may not succeed completely, but I think they will slow him down just enough to let their diverse and talented stable of running backs do their work. North Hills 24, Mars 21.

— The Knights are coming off their first loss of the season and South Fayette is, well, South Fayette.Good passing game. Effective running game. Solid defense.Knoch, though, has a solid defense of its own. Hate to pick against the Knights, but ... South Fayette 27-14.Elizabeth Forward at North Catholic — It's been difficult figuring out the Trojans this season. One week, they win a low-scoring game. The next, they're in a shootout.I decided to go with the middle ground: North Catholic 26-20.

— This could be one of the most entertaining games on the slate this week.Maybe even this season. Both teams have explosive offenses. The Yellowjackets have an explosive defense and special teams, too, it seems, with seven return touchdowns the last two weeks.Freeport will get another one this week and the offense will score enough to outpace Deer Lakes. Freeport 35-23.

— The Gremlins are getting frequent-flier miles with trips to St. Marys and Kane in back-to-back weeks.Karns City shook off a slow start against St. Marys and dumped the Dutch. This week is a stiffer test, though. A slow start will spell doom. Kane 25-22.

— The Warriors got a lot of confidence in a loss last week to Brookville. Moniteau, still dealing with injuries, held the high-flying Raiders to just 21 points. The Warriors are getting healthy and they are getting scary again. Moniteau 30-14.

— When the Rockets are firing — and not misfiring — they are among the best teams in District 10.For Slippery Rock, the playoffs start now. Look for the Rockets to play like it. Slippery Rock 30-20.

— The darlings of this football season are the Falcon Knights. They are soaring high. They keep soaring. Union/A-C Valley 24-12.

— Shady Side had to forfeit a game last week because of low numbers. It seems they have guys back this week. SSA 25-14.Scoop is in desperate need of perfection.
