21-year-old man's bond on drug charges reduced

Lawyer argues client 'has been in Butler County for years'

A Butler man suspected of dealing drugs will be released from jail after his lawyer successfully requested Wednesday that a judge reduce his bond from $100,000 to a nonmonetary bond.

Jackson R. Blakely, 21, is accused of using an associate in Lawrence County to traffic cocaine and marijuana. He was arrested April 10 following an investigation by the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics.

The bureau used a customer-turned-informant to track drug deals to Blakely, according to police reports. The informant identified Blakely as a source of previous drug purchases, investigators said.

He claimed he has known the defendant for a number of years and bought cocaine from him on a weekly basis. The arrest and search resulted in Blakely facing two separate charges related to drug distribution.

Blakely originally was arraigned on felony charges of running a corrupt organization, criminal use of a communication facility and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. An additional charge of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver was added after authorities said they found a pound of marijuana at his home. The additional charge led to Blakely being held in Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bond.

On Wednesday, Blakely's lawyer, Jeffrey Weinberg, asked Judge William Shaffer to release Blakely on a nonmonetary bond with pretrial supervision.

After Weinberg identified a member of the press in the courtroom, he asked Shaffer for a private conversation between himself, Shaffer and prosecutor Kara Lynn Cotter, who is with the attorney general's office.

After concluding the private conversation, Weinberg said, “That summarizes my arguments, your honor. He's a local guy. He has been in Butler County for years. He has his family here today.”

Shaffer granted Weinberg's request.

After the hearing, Weinberg explained that he needed to discuss Blakely's private matters, and he didn't want that information to be released to the public, prompting his request for a private conference.

The attorney general's office's narcotics task force executed the search warrant April 10 at Blakely's Holyoke Road house, where officers said they found Blakely and Hannah M. Hawryliak, his girlfriend, authorities said.

The search allegedly turned up about one pound of marijuana as well as bags, vacuum sealers and scales. The items, documents said, were “indicative of (possessing) narcotics with the intent to sell.”

Hawryliak, 22, of Center Township also is charged in connection with the search. Shaffer formally arraigned her on Aug. 6 for a felony charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

Blakely originally was released from jail April 12 after posting his original $25,000 bail in connection with his April 10 arrest by the Bureau of Narcotics. But he was arrested again April 15 after authorities added the extra intent to deliver charge, and he was placed back in jail on a $100,000 bond.
