Disc golf course set to open in Cranberry

Project was delayed because of weather

CRANBERRY TWP — Discs will fly Saturday when the township officially opens a new, much-anticipated disc golf course.

The ribbon will be cut on the North Boundary Nature Trail and Disc Golf Course at 10 a.m. Saturday. The project was the Cranberry Township Community Chest's (CTCC) 2018 Project of the Year.

The course features 80 acres of play, with woods and hillsides serving as natural obstacles. It offers a separate six holes, which officials said will help attract new players while still being challenging enough for more experienced golfers.

Roughly $200,000 for the project was raised through the CTCC.

Ground was broken on the project in April 2018, with inclement weather affecting the official opening date. According to Pete Geis, township parks and recreation director, initial plans called for opening last fall, but a significant amount of rain made it impossible to get equipment to the area.

He said crews have worked at a pretty good pace this spring, however, the grass must have a chance to grow back.

Geis said officials also had hoped to kick off the course's opening with a major tournament in conjunction with Pittsburgh Flying Disc. But the initial days of summer are typically the busiest in North Boundary Park, with Geis saying parking can be at a premium when the water park and sports fields are packed with activity. Add to that shelter rentals for events like graduation parties, and all involved decided waiting until the fall to hold such a tournament will be better.

There is no charge to play the course or walk the nature trail.

Officials noted a detour is scheduled Saturday on North Boundary Road. To access the course and ceremony, drivers can take Rowan Road from Route 19 to Marshall Road onto North Boundary Road.
