Butler City Farmer's Market gets going on Saturday

Local vendors will use the space at 205 S. Chestnut St. Saturday morning for the first time this season during opening day of the Butler City Farmer’s Market.

The market will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through the end of October.

Bob Dandoy, the market manager and a four-year volunteer, is looking forward to opening day.

“We’re really excited,” said Dandoy, who works on a committee of farmers who volunteer their time to organize the market. “Over the past seven years, the farmer’s market has really grown.”

He said that while it’s early in the season and there won’t be as much produce offered for sale Saturday, people should still come out, shop and enjoy.

Several local bakers and butchers will be at the market for shoppers’ Memorial Day picnic needs.

At 10 a.m., Don Shearer, a member of the local band Anger the Ant, will perform. Live music will continue throughout the summer with Market Music, a program each week between 10 a.m. and noon.

Shoppers can expect free coffee, doughnuts and prizes while supplies last.

In recent seasons, Dandoy said the growth in popularity of the market has been obvious. He said he has seen its numbers multiply.

“And it’s not people showing up just to buy tomatoes,” he said. “It’s a social event too, a really fun activity on a Saturday morning.”

The market has no shortage of vendors. He said in the past few years, vendors have frequently filled the building, occasionally even selling their produce under tents outside.

The committee is still lining up vendors for this summer, but it already has drawn interest from new vendors, creating hope for a promising season. Federal Distilling, a new vendor, will be at opening day.

And to anyone who hasn’t visited the market before, Dandoy said: “Come say hello and get a feel for what the market’s about.”
