Art department sets empty bowls event at schoolThe Butler Middle School Art Department hosts an Empty Bowls event from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the middle school. This is a student service learning project to fight hunger in our community.Sixth-grade students made handmade bowls out of clay and painted them with colorful glaze. All bowls are food safe. The bowls will be for sale at the event for $5 each. With a donation to purchase a bowl buyers will also get a sundae of vanilla ice cream and toppings.All proceeds will be donated to the Kids’ Weekend Backpack Program, which sends food home on the weekends to elementary students in need in the Butler School District.

Slippery Rock Farmers Market opens SaturdaySLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock Farmers Market opens Saturday in Gateway Park, along Route 108 (New Castle/Franklin streets) between Elm and South Main. Saturdays are market days, beginning at 9 a.m. and closing at 1 p.m., extending an extra hour this year.Sponsored by Slippery Rock Development, the market will continue into October, with the ending date to be determined.Because the market aims to support local growers and makers, all produce sold is grown locally and is seasonal. Throughout the market season, there will be an ever-changing variety and quantity of offerings.Vendors also will offer a variety of fresh, preserved, and ready-to-eat foods, as well as handmade items, such as soaps and jewelry.Watch the market’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/SRCFM/ for updates on what’s in season, new vendors and special events.
