Transit authority, Valley Lines seek backup CNG deal

The Butler Transit Authority and Valley Lines of Oakland Township are working on an agreement to supply each other’s buses with compressed natural gas if either of their fueling stations fails.

Officials from Valley Lines, which provides school and charter bus service, contacted the authority last week about creating a redundancy agreement, John Paul, authority executive director, said at Tuesday’s authority board meeting.

Board members unanimously voted to authorize Paul to work on the agreement, which will require board approval.

Neither entity would profit because the authority would pay Valley Lines the cost it pays for CNG and Valley Lines would pay the authority’s cost, Paul said.

He said he didn’t know what Valley Lines’ cost is.

“We pay their cost. They pay our cost,” Paul said.

A possible alternative for a backup source of CNG is the New Castle Transit Authority, but it’s farther away, Paul said.

Authority officials said they hope the new fueling station is fully operational by Friday.

The fueling station is one of 29 public transit projects statewide costing a total of $84.5 million that is being funded and constructed under the state Department of Transportation’s Public-Private partnership project run by Trillium CNG. The station is being built and will be maintained by Trillium at no cost to the authority.

Opening the station will save the authority the $7,500 monthly lease payments it is making for the temporary fueling station the buses currently use.
