Seneca Valley won't be tacking on make-up days to the calendar

JACKSON TWP — Three days of school closures across the county have likely already tacked days on to the end of the school year for many districts, but Seneca Valley School District has a different way of handling snow days.

Seneca Valley uses something called “flexible instructional days” to supplement missed school days, rather than adding a few extra days in June. The district calendar builds in two traditional make-up days, but any additional closures are covered through at-home, online assignments.

Superintendent Tracy Vitale said Seneca Valley was one of the few school districts across the state that signed up for a Pennsylvania pilot program for these “work-at-home” days during the 2014-2015 school year.

The first two days the district called off, which were Nov. 16 and Jan. 30 will be made up on Feb. 15 and April 23.

But the third inclement weather closure, which was Thursday, and all subsequent ones, including Friday, won't add to the school year.

This is an excerpt — find out more about how Seneca Valley implements “flexible instruction days” in the next issue of the Butler Eagle.
