SAXONBURG — A trailer fire in the Saxony Estates killed three dogs Tuesday night, according to firefighters.

Saxonburg Fire Chief Chris Ballina said his firefighters reported finding one dog in the kitchen area, where the fire originated, and two in the bedroom, which received heavy smoke damage. Two cats are missing.

Neighbors called 911 after seeing smoke pouring out of the trailer around 9:26 p.m. at 122 W. Red Oak Drive, owned by Michael and Cindy Martin.

The owners were not home at the time of the fire, according to Ballina.

Ballina said his crew arrived at 9:31 p.m. and had a quick engagement with the fire, which had largely died down by the time they arrived. He said newer siding provided an air tight environment, which kept the fire mostly contained to its origin point.

“When the fire started, most of the damage was in the kitchen area,” Ballina said. “The fire was burning hotter than the oxygen supply and burnt itself out.”

Ballina said when the crew arrived, mostly smoke was pouring out of the side of the trailer. He said firefighters had to put out some smaller flames in the kitchen and cut through the roof to extinguish a small area there.

“We went through the whole place, and it was (more) smoke damage than it was fire damage,” Ballina said.

The chief said most of the contents of the trailer could be salvaged, but the portion of the trailer that sustained damage from the flames will probably need to be rebuilt.

“I'm estimating damage to be around $40,000 total,” Ballina said.

Ballina said the owners were planning to stay with friends, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
