Authority alters bus stop sites in Pittsburgh

Changes take effect Jan. 28

The Butler Transit Authority on Tuesday approved changes to commuter service bus stops in Pittsburgh that will go into effect Jan. 28.

The commuter service will stop making North Shore stops at the North Side and Allegheny T-stations, but stops in downtown and the East Busway and additional trips will be added.

Due to a lack of riders, the North Shore stops will be eliminated, said John Paul, authority executive director.

Passengers wishing to reach the North Shore should disembark at Seventh and Grant streets, proceed to the Steel Plaza Rail Station to take the free light rail T to the North Shore.

The new stops are morning drop offs at Strawberry Way/Steel Tower and Penn Station at the East Busway. A new afternoon and evening pickup stop at Section D of East Busway also was added. Slight time adjustments will be made to the commuter schedule.

“The Port Authority of Allegheny County allowed us to use the East Busway,” Paul said.

Several other public bus services use the East Busway now, he said.

“Hopefully this will help in attracting riders,” Paul said, about the new stops.

One morning trip to Pittsburgh on the Route 3 bus and an afternoon trip to Pittsburgh on Route 4 will be added. Route 5 will no longer operate.

In addition, the authority will survey riders on commuter Routes 1 and 2 this week to determine if they want the buses to leave Pittsburgh 15 minutes earlier than they do now.

Paul said some riders requested the change, but the survey will be used to determine how many favor the change.

In other business, the authority approved an agreement for Internet technology services with Maher Duessel at a cost of $120 an hour and 58 cents a mile through June 30.

The authority will issue a request for proposals for a multiyear IT services agreement that starts July 1, the start of the fiscal year.

A new slate of officers was elected to serve this year. The board voted to elect James Diamond as chairman, Lance Calvert as vice chairman and Joe Hasychak as secretary.
