1 driver killed, another injured in 2-car crash

ROCKLAND TWP, Venango County — A Rimersburg man was killed Tuesday evening and another man was injured in a two-vehicle crash in southeastern Venango County, authorities said.

Willard A. Conner, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck on Route 322 just east of the North Country National Scenic Trail in Rockland Township.

State police said Conner was driving a 2002 Dodge Neon east about 6:15 p.m. when for an unknown reason he traveled into the opposing lane and collided with a westbound 2008 Saturn Aura.

John J. Michael, 42, of Emlenton, the other driver, was taken by ambulance to UPMC Northwest in Seneca with unknown injuries. His condition was not available Wednesday morning.

Michael's three passengers — 41-year-old Amy J. Palmer, a 17-year-old boy and a 1-year-old boy, all of whom are from Parker — were not injured.

Conner was not wearing a seat belt. Michael, Palmer and the teenager in the Saturn had seat belts on. The infant was in a child safety seat.

The crash investigation determined that Michael tried unsuccessfully to avoid the collision, according to a police report.

Following the crash, Conner's car spun back across the eastbound lane and ended on the south berm.

Michael's car was found on the north berm against the guardrail facing west.

Venango County Coroner Christina Rugh pronounced Conner dead of blunt force trauma, police said.

The wreck closed Route 322 for about two hours. Authorities said eastbound traffic was detoured onto Hill City Road and westbound traffic was diverted onto Route 38.

The Seneca Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene with traffic control.
