Metcalfe scouting other committees

He has chaired same panel 8 years

CRANBERRY TWP — After winning re-election for an 11th term, state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe may be considering a change of scenery.

On Wednesday, Metcalfe, R-12th, said he met with leadership in Harrisburg about committee chairmanships and open positions. He said a number of committees have spots that need to be filled as a result of retirements and the Nov. 6 midterm election. He said they include the House finance, transportation, consumer affairs and environmental committees.

Metcalfe defeated Democrat Dan Smith, outgaining the challenger 17,189 votes to 12,250, according to unofficial Pennsylvania Department of State results. Metcalfe has been the chair of the House State Government Committee for the past eight years. He cited legislation on pensions and regulatory reform as accomplishments, though he acknowledged there are still items to work on.

“There’s always work to be done on every committee,” he said. “You never fully accomplish your objectives list.”

Metcalfe said Wednesday’s discussions focused on finding a fit that would allow him to work for the best interest of residents in the 12th District, as well as the Republican Party, which maintains a majority in the House.

“There are a lot of committees that have a significant challenge ahead of them in the upcoming session,” he said, adding he’s looking for the best fit in which to use his skills.

Also Wednesday, Metcalfe responded to accusations that he was not present Tuesday for a remembrance and moment of silence for the 11 people killed Oct. 27 at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

On Tuesday, Rep. Brian Sims, D-182nd, sent a tweet in which he alleged Metcalfe was not present at the commemoration on the House floor. He added Metcalfe “should be ashamed of himself.”

Metcalfe responded Wednesday, saying he was in fact at the commemoration.

“Of course I was there,” he said, adding he was on the upstairs floor. “Just because he didn’t see me there doesn’t mean I wasn’t there.”

Metcalfe said he listened intently to Rep. Dan Frankel, D-23rd, who has represented the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh since 1999 and lives in the neighborhood. Frankel remembered those who were lost and shared stories of their lives.

Metcalfe said he has a friend who lost three friends during the “horrific, murderous act,” and he believed Sims’ accusations were “outrageous” and “very callous” to the loved ones of those who were killed.
