'Music Man' hits the right note

A classic slice of Americana unfolds on stage with Sing Hosanna's presentation of “Music Man” by Meredith Wilson, which opened this weekend at the Succop Theater on the Butler County Community College campus.

The show continues at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10 and 11. Tickets cost $15

Great costumes and some great performances make this production a perfect outing for families. The cast also acknowledges members of the Armed Forces prior to the show in a touching tribute.

The ensemble cast appears in a monochromatic color scheme as they sing about the stubborn Iowans while Harold Hill stands out bright and bold.

Hill is played by Michael Traverso. His opening number, “Ya Got Trouble” was a rousing fast talking glimpse into the energetic performances to follow. Traverso had great chemistry with his comical sidekick Marcellus, played by Andrew Stock. Their duet “The Sadder But Wiser Girl For Me” was hilarious.

“Pick-a-little, Talk-a-little” was a crowd favorite sung by the ladies of the cast and a lovely quartet of the school board, featuring Nathan Rockcastle, Matt Nocera, Alex McAuley and Ruth Nellis.

The Paroo family was fun to watch. Kelly Langdon rocked the Irish brogue while her real life son, Connor, carried the role of Winthrop with ease. The little carrot top mastered the lisp and was enjoyable as the shy boy who comes out of his shell thanks to the spiel of Harold Hill. Marian Paroo, played by Andrea Furks was the object of Hill's attention. Her “Till There Was You” was swoon worthy.

In the first act, “Marian the Librarian” was one of the best numbers. The ensemble scene featured most of the cast and some challenging choreography.

Act two's “Shipoopi” featuring Andrew Stock and the towns people called for some fast talking and fancy footwork. Stock delivered big.

The orchestra, directed of Ralph Christy Jr., did not disappoint. From trombones to snare drums, the band delivered the big band sound.
