Public can help homeless vets
An upcoming event will offer the public an opportunity to help Butler County's homeless veterans.
The third annual Stand Down event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Tanglewood Center on Fairground Hill Road.
Stand Down provides the county's homeless veterans with essential items like boots and flashlights as well as access to community resources.
Items being collected for distribution to homeless veterans are flashlights, boots in men's' sizes, flushable wipes, manual can openers, bus tokens, alcohol-free, travel-sized personal hygiene items, hats and scarves, first-aid kits, hand and foot warmers, grocery store gift cards, new backpacks, blankets, coats, ponchos, underwear, long underwear, sweatshirts and sweat pants.
Items can be dropped off during business hours at the Housing and Redevelopment Authority of Butler County, 114 Woody Drive, in the Pullman Center Business Park.
Last year, more than 150 veterans were assisted with services and outfitted with needed items.
At the Stand Down event, veterans receive lunch, haircuts, clothing, shoes, medical screenings, entertainment and more.
Volunteers are needed to help, and those who want to assist can call Dhana at the housing authority at 724-287-6797 or Allyson at Butler County Human Services at 724-284-5114.
