Waste Mgmt. gets township contract

BUTLER TWP — Township residents will have a new garbage and recycling collection company — and pay higher fees beginning next year.

Township commissioners Monday unanimously voted to hire Waste Management to replace Vogel Disposal.

Waste Management submitted the lowest bid for a five-year contract and a three-year extension.

Residents are currently paying Vogel $16.12 a month in the final year of a three-year contract.

The fee will increase to $19.65 next year, $20.24 in 2020, $20.85 in 2021, $21.48 in 2022 and $22.12 in 2023 under Waste Management’s bid. In the three-year extension, the fees will be $22.78 in 2024, $23.46 in 2025 and $24.16 in 2026.

The fee for backyard collection will be $415 next year and increase every year to $445.44 in 2023 and to $469.92 in 2026.

Vogel’s bid was $22.47 next year with annual increases to $25.31 in 2023 and to $27.67 in 2026. Vogel’s backyard collection bid was $300 next year increasing to $324 in 2023 and $330 in 2026.

In other business, the commissioners granted final approval for Sheetz plans to demolish its convenience store at the intersection of Route 68 and Meridian Road and build in its place a new prototype store.

Commissioners approved Sheetz land development plan, which the planning commission recommended for approval earlier this month, and a subdivision that adds an adjoining lot to the Sheetz property.

The zoning hearing board previously approved a special exception for a canopy over the fuel pumps and variances for lighting and signs.

David Mastrostefano, Sheetz engineering and permit project manager, said demolition, which includes a house on the adjoining lot, will begin in the spring and the new 6,077-square-foot store will be open in the fall or winter.
