Dogs get to dive in Sunday at Alameda

Morgan Richards of Petrolia throws a tennis ball into the pool as Blaze, her border collie, and Tucker, her Saint Bernard, wait to chase it during the “Dog Paddle Pool Pawty” Sunday at Alameda Park.

It was all sighs of relief and panting from the “Dog Paddle Pool Pawty” on Sunday at Alameda Park.

Chilly, wet weather the previous weekend forced Butler County Parks and Recreation to reschedule the Butler Humane Society event.

Dogs with proper vaccinations and behavior skills were allowed to enter and enjoy Alameda Park pool with their owners for a $10 fee, half donated to the humane society, according to Jennifer DiCuccio, the society's director.

“We do it for the community,” DiCuccio said. “This event is always a big hit, so that's why it was so important to have it rescheduled.”

About 100 dogs attended throughout the day, and many visitors and dogs left tired and happy, according to Kristen Cully, president of the humane society board of directors.

“Awesome,” Cully said. “We had a huge turnout.”Austin Shenette and Morgan Richards, both of Petrolia, brought their dogs, a border collie named Blaze and a Saint Bernard named Tucker, for the second straight year.“We made a special trip yesterday to get his vaccines so we could come today,” Shenette said. “It's a great way to get dogs to interact with each other.”Tim Calvert, aquatic and program manager for the Butler County Department of Parks and Recreation, said he was happy to partner with the humane society.“It's really nice to give back to the shelter,” he said. “They're great to work with.”

Tom Sellers of Center Township greets his dog, Remi, at the edge of the pool.
