[naviga:h3]Magnum’s ’stache gets nod in reboot[/naviga:h3]

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The reboot of “Magnum P.I.” won’t forget fans of the original hit starring Tom Selleck, paying quiet homage recognizable to long-time viewers.

They include a pair of Dobermans, the red Ferrari, and the bickering relationship between Magnum, who is played by Jay Hernandez, and Higgins, with Perdita Weeks taking on the role that was a man in the original.

Just don’t look for the big moustache that Selleck sported in the 1980s original on CBS. His character, along with those of Higgins and T.C., all sported ’staches.

Executive producer Peter Lenkov says Selleck brought that aesthetic to the role and the reboot aims to step away from his version of the character.

However, there will be what Lenkov calls “a little nod” to the moustache in the second episode.

The series debuts Sept. 24.

[naviga:h3]‘Charmed’ cast defends changes[/naviga:h3]

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The cast and producers of CW’s new “Charmed” are defending the reboot as a story for its time.

Series executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman said the drama series about three young half-sisters who are witches will confront modern issues including the MeToo movement.

The varied ethnicity of the sisterly trio — white, Latina and African-American — also gives the reboot more currency, Urman told a TV critics’ meeting Monday. The siblings have the same mom but different fathers.

Most people she’s talked to are in favor of the switch to characters of color, Urman said.

The original “Charmed” debuted in 1998 with Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty as the three Halliwell witch-sisters. Rose McGowan joined the series in 2006.

The CW remake debuts Oct. 14.

[naviga:h3]Patrick Stewart reprises ‘Star Trek’ role in new series [/naviga:h3]

NEW YORK — Patrick Stewart is boldly going where he’s been before — “Star Trek.”

CBS All Access said Saturday that Stewart has been tapped to headline a new “Star Trek” series, reprising his “Star Trek: The Next Generation” character, Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

The new series is not a “Next Generation” reboot but will tell the story of the next chapter of Picard’s life. No title or air date was revealed.

Stewart headlined his “Star Trek” series for seven seasons and portrayed Picard in the movies “Star Trek Generations” (1994), “Star Trek: First Contact” (1996), “Star Trek: Insurrection” (1998) and “Star Trek: Nemesis” (2002).

In a statement, Stewart says he thought his “Star Trek” days “had run its natural course” so he considers it a delightful surprise to be playing Picard again.
