'Treasure Island' a real pleasure for the audience

The Butler Little Theatre's Youth Production, “Treasure Island,” was cleverly staged and fun. Directors Shannon Donovan and Christian Cendrowski brought out the best in their cast of students ages 10-22.

The ingenious set was quickly transformed from an inn to a ship and to an island; all of the perfect settings for this story to unfold.

The show opened with young Jim Hawkins (Connor Yelich) dreaming of the sea and pirates during his days as a servant boy in his family's inn. Yelich played the part of wistful dreamer well and his chemistry with his co-stars both the good guys and the bad was spot on.

Ian Reitemeyer offered a commendable performance for his first time on the stage as Captain Billy Bones. His laugh, penchant for rum and mystery was intriguing and though his role was short he gave it a grand effort. His impact on young Hawkins was lasting.

Treasure seekers Doctor Livesey (Molly Miller) and Squire Trelawney (Victor Eberle) were quite the pair. One cautiously optimistic and the other enthusiastically optimistic. Eberle's enthusiasm led him to make some unwise choices. He put the adventure into the hands of Long John Silver, played by Cody Sutisna — whose larger-than-life persona commanded his scenes.

Jake Hetrick as Ben Gunn played the comical castaway. His performance was rich in humor and netted more than a few laughs out of the audience.

A swashbuckling sword fight held sway toward the end with fancy fencing footwork.

Pirate drama, maps and mutiny are the stuff of the adventure at Treasure Island. This family friendly story was an entertaining way to spend an evening. With a run time of about an hour, it was just the right length for younger audiences.

Delightful supporting roles were also offered up by Lynzie Ball, Emele Cammisa, Victor Eberle, Jake Hetrick, Montana Simpson, Rowan Smith, Sawyer Smith and Lydia Steele.
