Butler man charged with strangling his wife

Troy Williams

A Butler man faces a hearing next month on charges he strangled his wife during a domestic dispute at their home and later tried to run from arresting officers.

Troy L. Williams, 30, is free on $30,000 bail in the case that started about 10 p.m. May 17, when he allegedly assaulted his wife at their home on Amy Avenue.

City police spoke to the woman about 4 p.m. May 18 at the MedExpress on New Castle Road in Butler Township, where she reported what happened the night before, according to court documents.

She recounted that Williams punched her in the face three times and then placed her in a headlock and strangle hold from behind. He allegedly applied pressure to her neck that made breathing difficult.

The woman told police that she did not immediately call police because she “was scared.”

Police said that after interviewing the woman they went to the couple's home where they found Williams. When they attempted to arrest him, documents said, he became “extremely combative.”

He is accused of telling officers. “You are not taking me to jail” and “I'm not getting in the back of the car.”

While in handcuffs and being led to a patrol car, police said, Williams attempted to run from officers. Police subsequently tackled him.

But after he was stood up, documents said, he again tried to run and was again taken to the ground.

He was eventually arraigned on a felony charge of strangulation and misdemeanor charges of simple assault and resisting arrest, and placed in Butler County Prison. He posted bail Saturday and was released.

His preliminary hearing is set June 11.

Online court records did not indicate if Williams has an attorney.
