[naviga:h3]Rules for deer from out of Pa. expanded[/naviga:h3]

HARRISBURG — The Game Commission has expanded the rules about hunting in a few other states.

Pennsylvanians who harvest deer anywhere in New York, Ohio, Maryland or West Virginia no longer may bring them home without first removing carcass parts that contain the highest risk of transmitting chronic waste disease.

The updated order gives Pennsylvania deer better protection against the disease, according to Bryan Burhans, the Game Commission’s executive director.

“The previous rules didn’t provide assurance that deer harvested in CWD-positive counties within New York, Ohio, Maryland or West Virginia weren’t making their way into the Commonwealth,” Burhans said. “While the order prohibited the high-risk parts of those deer from being imported into Pennsylvania, enforcement was difficult for many reasons.”

[naviga:h3]Police will conduct DUI checkpoints[/naviga:h3]

The state police will be holding driving under the influence checkpoints over the Memorial Day weekend. Motorists are advised to be aware of their surroundings and to have their license, registration and insurance cards readily available.

Motorists also are encouraged to drive sober or get a designated driver, and to use their seat belts.

Motorists are reminded of the steer-clear law, which states that motorists must move over to the lane farthest way from stopped emergency vehicles and slow down if it is not possible to move over.
