Logan Pistorius singled to right field with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth inning Wednesday night, handing unbeaten Karns City a come-from-behind, 5-4 victory over Moniteau at Kelly Automotive Park.

The KC victory on Senior Night snapped a 13-game Warrior winning streak and marked the Gremlins' second 5-4 decision over its neighboring rival this season.

The teams will meet again May 24 at Kelly Automotive Park in the District 9 championship game.

“If you're looking for an idea of what you're gonna get that night, this game is definitely on the menu,” Karns City coach Josh “Sluggo” Smith said. “This was just a great game.

“I couldn't get all my seniors in the game tonight, but they went hoarse cheering so loud for their teammates. I loved seeing that.”

Moniteau (14-4) took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh and a 4-3 advantage into the bottom of the ninth — and couldn't hold either one of them.

Wyatt Geibel's two-out RBI single plated Jake Jewart with the go-head run for Moniteau in the fifth. With Hunter Fitzingo on the mound, it looked like that lead might stand up.

Fitzingo had 11 strikeouts and allowed only four hits all night as he took the mound for his warm-up pitches in the seventh. He was at 92 pitches.

“I knew what my pitch count was. I was going to try to finish it,” Fitzingo said.

He never got the chance.

Fitzingo's knee buckled during a warm-up toss and he crumpled to the ground. He had to be helped from the field and had a large ice pack strapped to the knee after the game.

“It was one of those freakish things that just happens,” said Fitzingo, who had knee surgery after a football injury his sophomore year. “There's nothing you can do about it.”

Chance Nagy relieved Fitzingo and surrendered back-to-back doubles to Cameron Blair and Jake Weckerly with one out to tie the game. Nagy escaped further damage and the game moved into extra innings.

Nolan Riley doubled to left to begin KC's eighth inning. Pistorius singled him to third with one out. Jewart took over on the mound at that point, got Austin Rumbaugh to pop up to shallow right and Colton Hutchison to fly to center to keep the game alive.

Pistorius took the hill for the Gremlins (15-0) in the ninth. Tyler Yough threw 99 pitches in working the first eight innings. He did not walk a batter.

“Tyler is simply a bull,” Smith said. “He's not a very emotional kid. Just give him the ball and he gets it done.”

Jewart doubled to left with two outs in the Warriors' ninth. A wild pitch sent him to third and Nick Sosigian grounded a single up the middle to give Moniteau the lead.

Pistorius wasn't fazed.

“I still thought we were going to win,” he said. “I thought we'd get it done before I got a chance to bat.”

Pistorius was due up seventh in the KC ninth. Blair beat out an infield single to begin the inning and Weckerly walked. Connor Schaffner tried bunting the runners up, but Jewart fielded the ball and fired to third for the force-out.

A walk to Steve O'Donnell loaded the bases and Nolan Riley hit a sacrifice fly to right to knot the game. With runners on the corners, Moniteau elected to intentionally walk Yough.

“He's one of their best hitters,” Jewart said. “That kid is a tough out. If we have a chance to face anyone else but him and get out of the inning ... We're going to do that.:”

That brought up Pistorius with the bases full. He worked the count full, then ended the game with his single to right — his fourth hit of the game.

“Just look for a pitch to drive,” Pistorius said. “He had to come to me with the count full. I was looking fastball and I got one.”

Smith said Pistorius was “the perfect guy” to have at the plate in that situation.

“Nothing bugs him,” the coach said. “He just goes about his business.”

Pistorius wound up with four singles and two RBI for the Gremlins.

Geibel had three singles, Jewart a double and two singles to pace Moniteau's 12-hit attack.

“This next game will be intense, the crowd will be huge and both teams will be ready for an intense game,” Jewart said of the impending district title game. “We know our teams are even. We have to go out, play a good game and win.”

Karns City completed a perfect regular season.

“It's nice to win a game, but the life lesson is more important,” Smith said. “Never give up, especially when things get rough. Hopefully, these kids will go through life like that.”
