Allegheny Valley Hospital recently announced the 2018 recipients of the Lois Eileen Neubert Scholarship, given in honor of a Butler County native.

Vernon Neubert established the scholarship in 2017 in memory of his late wife, who died in 2016. The Lois Eileen Neubert Scholarship awards $8,000 annually to an outstanding student at Citizens School of Nursing.

Erin Rice of Butler and Rachael Patton of New Kensington, Westmoreland County, first-year students at Citizens School of Nursing in New Kensington, are recipients of the second annual scholarship award.

Applicants must have completed the first semester of their first year at Citizens, have demonstrated financial need, and have at least a 3.0 grade point average. The Allegheny Valley Hospital board of trustees selects the recipients.

SCRANTON — Jeanne Sullivan of Saxonburg recently received news of her medical residency placement.

Sullivan will train for several years at University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver for Obstetrics and Gynecology.

She is a fourth-year medical student at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Lucas Moran of Cranberry Township received the Society of the War of 1812 Award at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.Moran is a member of the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps.The Society of the War of 1812 Award is presented to cadets who have done the most to demonstrate and encourage the ideals of Americanism by both deed and conduct. He also was honored for his academic and military leadership and excellence.—–—ELMIRA, N.Y. — Elijah Butler of Worthington recently received honor cords from the Elmira College Rho Mu Chapter chapter of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education.Kappa Delta Pi fosters excellence in education and promotes fellowship among those dedicated to teaching.———NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Jesse Fair of Slippery Rock will present his project “Creative Endeavors” at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. His project was selected for oral presentation based on his submitted abstract.Fair is a sophomore at Trevecca Nazarene University. He is a graduate of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School.—–—CONWAY, S.C. — Madeline Stanger, a biology major from Prospect, recently was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society for freshmen.Phi Eta Sigma recognized Stanger's academic performance at Coastal Carolina University.

During Pennsylvania 4-H week, Town and Country Kids 4-H club held a fundraiser at the Clearview Mall to benefit Butler County Animal Response Team (CART).The event was part of the 4-H year-long process of learning and community service. These activities go beyond their individual projects and selling animals at the Butler Farm Show.Through the Red Cross, Butler CART supplies items to families with pets who have experienced a disaster and lost everything. The items include, feed dishes, small bags of food, cat litter, toys, treats, leashes and other animal supplies.———JACKSON TWP — Victoria Beck, a junior at Seneca Valley High School, was selected to participate in the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Global and International Studies at the University of Pittsburgh this summer.Following a competitive application process based on GPA, coursework, essays and faculty recommendations, she received a full scholarship to attend this intensive, residential program.During the program, she will attend global studies lectures; learn a lesser taught language such as Mandarin, Portuguese or Arabic; participate in immersive cultural experiences; and develop her oral and written communication skills.———JACKSON TWP — Ten Seneca Valley School District students recently placed in five categories at the Associated Artists of Butler County High School Student Art Show.Senior Faith Luce won Best in Show for her piece “Depth.”Senior Erin Piotrowski placed first for “Matty G” in the painting category and second for “Holy Beliefs” in the drawing category.In the photography and digital art category, senior Jack Reynolds placed first for his piece titled “Home Less,” and sophomore Emily Tekelenburg's “A Hollow Emotion” received an honorable mention.Senior Jillian Dressler placed first for her piece “Band of Brothers” in the drawing category.In the painting category, two seniors received honorable mentions, Taylor Martin for “Two Girls in a Field” and Henry Von Rintelen for “Spires of Copenhagen.”Senior Rachel Blackwood placed second for her 3-D/sculpture/ceramics piece “Untitled.” In the same category, seniors Lauren George and Isabella Moosa received honorable mentions for “Angelo and Percy” and “Mumford” respectively.The school district submitted 200 entries for grades 7 to 12. The Seneca Valley Art Department received an award for Best Quality Artwork/Participation.Students winning first or second place or Best in Show won cash prizes.
