Mars sets special education meeting

ADAMS TWP — Mars School District will hold a meeting Monday in an effort to address concerns raised by a recent special education audit.

The 6:30 p.m. meeting will outline plans for how the district will address the audit, which was completed in December and released in January.

It said the district is out of compliance with state rules in a number of areas, including “least restrictive environment,” which is based on a student’s ability to be educated with nondisabled peers to the greatest extent possible.

Other areas of noncompliance include parent training, personnel training and a lack of documentation needed for students to make the transition from high school to college or the work force.

During both a work session and the regular school board meeting in March, parents of students with special needs spoke of their concerns with the audit, and shared their personal experiences with the board. Many said the audit is concerning because the same problems were found in a 2012 review and were not addressed.

Parents asked the board how they could become involved, and also requested a time in which to ask questions and share input with the district outside of the regular board meetings, which place time restrictions on public comment.

During Monday’s meeting parents and community members will have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with district officials.

The meeting will take place in the Mars High School LGI Room. For more information, call 724-625-1518.
