Unique show is quick trip down memory lane

BUTLER TWP — Sites and sounds all come together for a preview of Sing Hosanna's latest offering “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber,” a compilation of 20 classics by the prolific songwriter.

The show opened Friday and will run through the weekend at Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.

Each show is unique as the leads are cast differently throughout the run.

“For many of these performers, this is the only time they will have the chance to sing these songs as the shows are very complex to stage locally,” said Ralph Christie Jr., director.

Simple sets, excellent talent and dynamic music make for a fun show that will leave the audience humming on their way out.

The show opens with the energetic “Jellicle Ball” from “CATS,” an instrumental piece featuring dancing cats with some delightful choreography well executed by Trisha Doverspike, Mandy Kamerer, and Andrea Furka. A quick transition to the tune “Memory” featured Dale Riemer, Pam Prentice and Alisha Stephenson, a trio of cats looking back and moving ahead. Great harmonies and delightful vocals along with creative costuming brought “CATS” to life.

The kids got into the action with “Light at the End of the Tunnel” from “Starlight Express.” It was a cute number with the young ensemble featuring Camden Rockcastle and Leah Harris.

“Sunset Boulevard” came to life through the songs of Nora Desmond featuring Pam Prentice singing “With One Look” and “As if We Never Said Goodbye” engaging staging and costuming and a compelling delivery made for a memorable look back at “Sunset Boulevard” and why it became a hit for Webber.

One of the most amazing numbers of the show was “Love Changes Everything” from “Aspects of Love” presented by all the ladies who portrayed Christian Daae and the men who Portrayed Raoul throughout the run. Performers Rachel Creaturo, Samantha Barr, Andrea Furka, Dennis Smalley, Nathan Rockcastle and Dave Prentice delivered crystal clear notes and tight harmonies which produced a show stopping number.

Racheal Creaturo, as Christine Daae, in an elegant peacock trimmed dress offered up a beautiful rendition of “Love Never Dies” from the musical of the same name.

Act One also contained songs from “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and a Happy Birthday tribute to the 70-year-old Webber.

Act Two began with six songs from “Phantom of the Opera” one of Webber's most popular works. The role of Phantom was sung by Nathan Rockcastle, Christine was Samantha Barr and Raoul was Dennis Smalley.

“Evita” was represented by Alisha Stephenson as Eva Peron singing “Don't Cry for Me Argentina” featuring some excellent brass music which transitioned into four numbers from “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

The production concluded with “Pie Jesu,” an instrumental.

Most of the numbers were supported by an adult ensemble or vocals from the orchestra pit and outstanding musicians.

Amazing music, flowing scenery, clever choreography and a run time under two hours makes for a quick trip down memory lane reliving the shows that made Andrew Lloyd Webber the master of the musical that he is.
