Manziel attracts NFL scouts

10 NFL teams watch QB throw at USD pro day

For the University of San Diego, this was a Pro Day unlike any other.

Johnny Manziel, a former first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns attempting a comeback from substance-related setbacks, attracted evaluators from up to 10 NFL teams Thursday morning while throwing to a pair of USD pass-catchers at the Toreros’ synthetic-turf practice field.

“It was fun,” Manziel told the Union-Tribune after throwing 37 passes. “I’m here for these (USD) guys. They seem like great dudes.”

Manziel, who developed a relationship with USD personnel through his San Diego-based quarterbacks coach, George Whitfield Jr., said it was his most extensive performance with NFL staff present since his final game with the Browns, at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium on Dec. 27, 2015.

“It was great. Second time working with those guys,” he said. “So, it’s obviously a little weird coming into a Pro Day setting like that.”

Manziel, 25, said he has been working out in Los Angeles and is at his strongest and fittest, perhaps ever - or comparable to when he became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, in 2012 with Texas A&M.

Manziel told ABC News last month that he was self-medicating with alcohol during his two-year tenure with Cleveland and suffering from depression. He said he is now taking medication for bipolar disorder.

Following the workout, he said he has an offer to play in Canada but would welcome the chance to return to the NFL and expects to show progress next week in a spring-league session in Texas.

“It’s a process right now,” he said. “I think that’s all playing itself out, and the quarterback market itself is playing itself out. We’ll see as things continue. All I can really continue to do is focus on myself, and focus on what I’ve been doing to try to be the best person that I can.

“Football is one of my main priorities of my life but as you guys know and as you guys have seen, there are other things in my life that are equally as important.”
