Summit school still has copper

The water at Summit Township Elementary School is lead free, according to tests of water samples collected Feb. 21.

The water is not entirely free of elevated levels of copper. One of the samples came back with 2.03 parts per million (ppm) of copper, which is above the 1.3 ppm action level set by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The district is continuing to test the water in the school for lead and copper levels, according to a letter by Superintendent Brian White recently posted to the district’s website.

Copper is an essential nutrient, but ingesting too much of it over a short period could cause gastrointestinal stress, according to DEP.

In light of the test, school employees will flush every faucet in the building each day before school, White said in the letter.

Students returned to the school in January, about 11 months after it was temporarily closed because of high levels of lead in the water. The school is now connected to a public water line instead of using a well.
