3 stay alive on mat
Three Butler County wrestlers are still alive for a state championship and will be competing in Class AAA quarterfinal action Friday at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Seneca Valley's Alejandro Herrera (106 pounds), Louis Newell (120) and Mars' Alex Hornfeck (145) each won their respective first-round bouts Thursday.
Herrera decisioned East Pennsboro's Adam Jacob, 5-0, and will face Liberty's Tal-Reese Flemming in the quarterfinal round.
Newell dominated Cathedral Prep's Paniro Johnson with a 15-3 major decision. Newell will next face Cedar Cliff's J.J. Wilson.
Hornfeck used a 3-0 decision to get by Bethlehem Catholic's Cole Handlovic and will meet Northern York's Micah Johnson in the quarters.
Butler's Christian Sequete suffered a second-period pin at the hands of Shikellamy's Josh Krieger in the first round of action in the 182-pound bracket.
He rebounded by pinning Giani Gilch of Council Rock South and will wrestle in consolations.
Class AA
Mike Doerflinger (145) of Slippery Rock defeated Newport's Michael Capozzoli, 11-1, in the preliminary round before being pinned by South Side's Joe Demor.
Doerflinger will wrestle in the second round of consolations Friday.
Summit Academy's Tyler Stine saw his season come to an end with a pair of defeats in the 195-pound bracket.
