Butler girls cruise

Lack of practice not an issue for Golden Tornado

BUTLER TWP —The Butler girls basketball team pulled out a dominant win in a turnover-filled game on a week in which the Golden Tornado were unable to practice.

Due to a school cancellation, neither team had a chance to prepare much for this game.

However, Butler used its size and force on the boards to control the game on the way to a 41-24 home win.

“Defensive and offensive rebounds were the difference in this game,” said Butler coach Mark Maier. “We played great defense to only hold them to nine points in the second half.”

It was a common theme of the night; Butler grabbing defensive rebounds then controlling the ball in the offensive zone.

Alyssa Eyth was the star of the game, tallying 17 points, including 4-for-6 from the foul line.

Jenna Kunst was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line. She drained a 3-pointer in the first period to finish with nine points.

Gia Angelo led all St. Joseph's players with sevenpoints.

St. Joseph senior guard Chloe Kurpakus made only one field goal, but had five steals.

St Joseph's head coach Sally Ackerman praised her players resiliency.

Butler controlled the tempo in the first three quarters. St. Joseph finally had similar movement for a large portion of the fourth period but it was too little, too late.

The Butler lead was too large to overcome.

It was the final game for St. Joseph before the WPIAL playoffs and Ackerman encouraged her players to forget the regular season and move on the next.

Meanwhile, Butler has two games remaining, including a home game Saturday afternoon against Obama Academy.
