Man gets jail sentence in DUI chase/crash cases

Jay E. Vinroe

A Renfrew man was sentenced to jail in Butler County Court on Thursday, after being charged in two driving under the influence-related incidents, including a high-speed chase and crash.

Jay E. Vinroe, 52, was sentenced to nine to 18 months in Butler County Prison by Judge William Shaffer. He was given 188 days time served credit.

He was also ordered to pay court costs, $1,100 in fines and attend an Alcohol Highway Safety School.

Vinroe pleaded guilty Jan. 16 to misdemeanor fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement and two counts of DUI in two separate cases.

He was initially charged with DUI, DUI highest rate and summary traffic violations after an incident on Jan. 21, 2017, and felony fleeing, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, as well as more than a dozen summary traffic violations after an incident on Aug. 5.

In the January incident, state police filed the charges after a motorcycle wreck on Route 8 in front of the Rock House bar in Clay Township, where Vinroe was found to be more than 2½ times the state’s blood alcohol limit when he crashed his motorcycle.

State police filed the charges in the August incident after a 21-mile, high-speed chase through several Butler County municipalities.

Police said a 2003 Dodge Durango with an illegal license plate was spotted on Route 8 near Sunset Drive in Center Township, and when troopers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver approached “speeds in excess of 100 mph,” documents said.
