2 break-in tries add to man's list of charges

Other case involved machete

JEFFERSON TWP — A preliminary hearing is pending for a Butler man accused of trying to break into two homes on Kayla Lane last year.

State police last week charged Douglas B. Spink, 46, with two counts each of attempted burglary and criminal mischief.

The charges are the latest to be filed against Spink, who is being held in Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.

Butler police in November arrested Spink following a more than two-hour standoff during which he wielded a machete. He also is awaiting a preliminary hearing in that case.

Troopers, in the latest case filed Jan. 10, charged Spink with trying to get inside homes at 104 and 105 Kayla Lane on Oct. 6. He allegedly damaged both doors and left blood on them.

Spink, however, claimed he earlier had cut a finger after falling from his vehicle and was going to the homes “supposedly for help,” according to court documents.

His preliminary hearing has yet to be scheduled at the office of District Judge Sue Haggerty in Saxonburg.

Butler police came in contact with Spink Nov. 25, in connection with the standoff in an alley between Fulton and Pearl streets.

Police said they had a mental health warrant for Spink when they found him in a vehicle armed with a machete. He initially refused to leave.

Later he stepped out of the vehicle, police said, but he would not drop the large knife. An officer deployed his Taser, which apparently had little effect on Spink.

Butler Township police and state police were called for assistance.

Officers continued to negotiate in hopes of getting Spink to surrender, documents said, but during the incident police deployed their Tasers four additional times.

Police also hit Spink with several bean bag rounds — “less lethal” ammunition that can be shot from a shotgun or rifle.

He eventually was arrested but not before running through a group of officers and biting one of them on the hand.

Spink was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Details about the involuntary mental health warrant were not released.

He was released Nov. 30 and booked into the county jail on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. His preliminary hearing is Jan. 22 before District Judge William Fullerton.
