Butler Health System gets strong 10-year checkup

Butler Health System ended the fiscal year in the black and reported long-term increases in admissions, patient visits, revenue and employment.

The health system’s financial health was reviewed by Ken DeFurio, president and CEO, at its annual public board of trustees meeting Thursday.

For the fiscal year that ended June 30, the health system had $352 million in revenue and $330.3 million in expenses. The $22.29 million difference was invested in addressing community health care needs.

Other financial highlights about the health system included:

Total admissions increased 13 percent over a 10-year period from 15,757 in 2008 to 17,789 this year.

In-patient admissions were about 13,000 and observation admissions were about 5,000 this year.

The number of days patients stayed in the hospital rose 3 percent during the last 10 years.

Patient days were 70,891 in 2008, fluctuated over the years and reached 72,718, the most in the 10-year period, this year.

Emergency room visits grew 15 percent from 41,199 in 2008 to 47,391 this year. The number peaked at 48,708 in 2015.

Outpatient visits increased 13 percent from 452,564 in 2008 to 509,150 this year and peaked at 515,290 last year.

The number of surgeries increased 15 percent from 18,106 in 2008 to 20,844 this year, which was the highest number in the last 10 years.

Net patient revenue grew 95 percent from $175,406 in 2008 to $341,832 this year. The number increased every year in the 10-year span.

The health system’s operating margin, the proportion of revenue left after wages and other costs are paid, is 6.3 percent, which is down from the last two years. The operating margin peaked during the 10-year period at 7.7 percent last year and was 6.9 percent in 2015.

The operating margin was lowest from 2011 to 2013 when it was 0.3 percent, 1.5 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively.

The number of employees increased 35 percent from 1,787 in 2008 and rose each year to 2,404 this year.
