Summit Academy falls in game marred by brawl
CLAIRTON — The Summit Academy football team struggled to find consistency in its 41-18 loss to Clairton in the WPIAL Class A first round of playoffs.
After two Clairton touchdowns, the Knights found some explosiveness in the second quarter with a 75-yard kickoff return, which set up a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Delano Brown to running back Antonio White, their only score of the first half.
Summit Academy was also inconsistent in stopping the Bears, despite an effort led by tackle Calvin Madeira, who recorded two sacks.
In the second half, Summit Academy scored once more on a long pass before turmoil erupted late in the fourth quarter.
A Summit Academy late hit sidelined Clairton quarterback Brendan Parsons a few plays before the Bears' running back Tre'sean Howard scored on a 10-yard run, his fourth TD of the game.
Shortly after the scoring run, the tension broke with a fist fight that evolved into a bench-clearing scrum.
After the players returned to their respective sidelines, both teams decided to send a majority of their players to the locker rooms, leaving a handful to play out the remaining minutes of the game.
The remaining players shook hands before play resumed with a non-score-related rolling clock, and Summit Academy would score the final touchdown of the game, a 55-yard connection from Brown to White, with 5:28 remaining.
The Bears ate the clock for the remaining five minutes.
A representative for Summit Academy's team declined to comment.
