Rescuers kept busy with 2 falls at park
Rescue crews were busy Thursday afternoon at McConnells Mill State Park when two hikers were injured in separate accidents and needed to be rescued, Chief Park Ranger Bryan Moore said.
Both woman were taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
In the first incident, a 58-year-old woman slipped on the North Country Trail and hit her head on a rock, causing a gash or cut.
Just as rescuers finished responding to that call, a second incident — this time on the Alpha Trail — required a second rescue. A 42-year-old woman stepped off a large rock onto the trail, turning her foot and possibly breaking a bone.
Both hikers had to be carried from the scene to ambulances in stokes baskets. The Portersville VFD, Portersville EMS, Slippery Rock VFD and Scott Township VFD responded to the scene.
Moore, speaking generally about the terrain and trails at McConnells Mill State Park, said hikers need to be aware of the rocks, temperature differences and the fact that some trails don’t loop around — meaning that hikers must return on the same path they went out on.
“We caution everybody to wear the proper footwear,” he said.
