Raiders focused on the run

Seneca Valley looks to contain Butler, keep Eagle Trophy

This is one in a series of previews of this Friday's high school football gamesJACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley's defense squared off against one extreme last week, facing a Pine-Richland team that totaled 317 passing yards, most of them coming in the first half.Winning this week will require the Raiders to contain Butler's productive ground attack.Seneca Valley will host the Golden Tornado Friday in the 25th battle for the Butler Eagle Traveling Trophy. The Golden Tornado have a physical line on both sides of the ball, led by University of Pittsburgh recruit Jake Kradel (6-foot-4, 285-pounds).Offensively, Butler (1-1, 0-1) had little trouble getting its powerful ground game going last week against Altoona, gaining 283 yards and scoring six touchdowns in a 45-28 victory. The Tornado attempted just six passes the entire game.Adding to the challenge for Seneca Valley (0-2, 0-1), the team is not healthy.“We were handed some injuries last week (a 42-7 loss),” said Raider coach Ron Butschle. “What we know right now is that our defensive tackles will be Drew Robertson (6-2, 285) and Tyler Proctor (6-0, 265). With our two ends, we are feeling our way. It's a work in progress.“Butler has a lot of size up front and the guys in there for us have to play hard.”A focal point for SV's defense will be Butler halfback Luke Michalek, who gained 149 yards on the ground and scored four touchdowns last week.“We have to control the line of scrimmage, but we also have to be better tacklers,” said Butschle. “He (Michalek) is pretty quick and shifty.”One player who SV will be counting on is senior Gabe Miller, last season's leading tackler on the team who could remain at outside linebacker or move to end if needed. The Raiders will be looking to get halfback Noah Mancuso back on track. After rushing for 121 yards in a 13-8 loss to Peters Township, the senior was held to 37 yards on 11 carries by Pine-Richland. He did score SV's lone touchdown against the Rams.SV quarterback Gabe Lawson has completed 15-of-33 passes for 121 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. He is also a threat to run the ball, amassing 81 yards through two games.“We've had trouble executing our offense the first two weeks,” said Butschle. “Again, it starts with our play up front. We have to execute and play hard. It sounds elementary, but that's what it comes down to.“It might be a quick game because both teams want to run the football.”The last time the Tornado defeated the Raiders was a 14-0 decision in 2006. Since then, SV has won 10 straight in the series.“We haven't talked about the history of this series, but our kids are well aware of it,” said Butschle. “We just need to focus on us.”
