Furious Punxsy rally stuns Moniteau

Moniteau's Manny McLean cuts up the middle Friday evening at Moniteau High School. The Warriors lost a 16-point lead in the last minute before eventually falling 34-28 to Punxsutawney in a KSAC Large School Division matchup.
Chucks' score OT win after 4th quarter rally

CHERRY TWP — Punxsutawney Chucks quarterback Dylan Ishman connected with Tyler Richardson on the second play of overtime to cap off a furious rally from 16 points behind in the final minute of regulation to stun the Moniteau Warriors 34-28 on Friday night.

“There's really not much to say to the kids about this one,” Warriors' head coach Jon McCune said. “We just folded in the end.”

Following the overtime score, Moniteau got its chance, but a pair of sacks led to backup quarterback Hunter Fitzingo's desperation pass on a 4th-and-goal from the 25 that fell incomplete.

Punxsutawney's comeback began with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, when Punxsutawney took possession of the ball at the Moniteau 40-yard line after a Warriors punt and trailing 28-12. A Stone Smith 25-yard run put the Chucks in scoring position, and after a sack by Moniteau, Ishman connected with Richardson in the end zone from 17-yards out. The two-point conversion cut the lead to eight points with 56 seconds left on the clock.

Punxsutawney recovered the ensuing onside kick, and just three plays and 26 seconds later, Ishman connected with Richardson in the end zone again, this time from 37 yards. It was one of four touchdown connections between the two in the game. Ishman found Jake Pearce for the two-point conversion to tie the game.

After a sluggish start for both teams, the Chucks got on the board first, late in the first quarter, when Stone Smith, who ended the game with 88 yards rushing, scored from 27 yards out to give Punxsutawney a 6-0 lead.

That lead was short-lived, however, as Manny McLean, who also led Moniteau in rushing yards with 56, returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards to give the Warriors the lead 7-6 after the extra point.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter, as Moniteau took a 14-12 lead into halftime.

The Warriors dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Chucks 14-0 to increase their lead to 28-12. Cody Wise scored on a 9-yard run midway through the period and Nick Martino returned a fumble 50 yards on the final play of the quarter.

Moniteau quarterback Chance Nagy, who threw for 67 yards and ran for 47 yards, was injured midway through the third quarter and did not return.
