BUFFALO TWP — History repeated itself with a Freeport High School class.

For the second consecutive year, students in the Freeport Advanced Placement World History class scored high on the standardized AP exam.

Student Claire Crytzer, 17, of Freeport, an incoming senior, credited instructor Dave DiSanti for every student receiving a 4 or 5 out of 5 on this year's AP exam.

“He really does get the best out of you,” Claire said.

Classmate Andrew Nigra, 17, of Buffalo Township, an incoming senior, agreed.

“He really helps us go in-depth to understand the material,” Andrew said.

Fellow student Justin Foran, 17, of South Buffalo Township, who also was a junior this past school year, also attributed the class' success to DiSanti.

“Mr. DiSanti is an incredible teacher,” Justin said. “Everyone in the class understands what he's saying.”

Claire, who scored a 5 on the AP exam, cited DiSanti's essay workshops as particularly helpful.

“The workshops are very structured,” Claire said.

She said the class jointly works on various aspects of their respective essays.

“That really helped,” Claire said.

DiSanti said he came up with the idea for the joint essay writing after he noted students struggling with the mechanics of writing in the format required by the AP grading.

“It's a completely different style of writing,” he said.

Justin said DiSanti's power point presentations also were beneficial.

Claire said she had some trepidation the night before taking the spring exam.

“I don't know anything about the Mongols,” Claire recalled thinking.

But DiSanti's advice took hold.

“He said you guys have all worked hard,” Claire said. “Just go in there and don't overthink it.”

Andrew, who scored a 5, said he was confident taking the AP exam.

“I felt I was prepared to take it,” he said.

Justin admitted he had the jitters.

“In all honesty, I was very nervous,” he said.

However, Justin said the preparation done during the class paved the way for the 5 he scored.

DiSanti credited the students for their achievement.

“They worked very hard,” he said.

There were 11 students in the class, which surpassed the national average of 28 percent of students scoring at least a 4 on the AP exam.

Six of the 11, or 55 percent, scored a 5, compared the national average of 8.5 percent of students.

This is the third year the high school offered the class, which replaced AP U.S. History.

Over the last three years, 95 percent of Freeport students have scored at least a 4.

After taking the AP exam, the class visits the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.

DiSanti uses the learning opportunity for students to prepare for their final exam by researching the museum exhibits.
