TOWN CRIER

BUTLER TWP — The Butler School board at its meeting Monday night:

Heard an update on the progress of getting public water to Summit Township Elementary School, which has problems with lead and copper in its water.

Eric Buzza, of engineering firm Gannett-Fleming, said that the Pennsylvania American water line extension has been installed, but the water company still has to do pressure tests and flushing before the school can be connected. Buzza said he expected the school’s service line to be hooked up by the end of next week.

Once connected, water will be run into the school’s pipes and tested for lead and copper levels. The public water contains phosphate that will coat the school’s pipes to prevent more lead and copper from dissolving into the water. However, it is unknown how long it will take for the pipes to get coated and for the lead and copper levels to decrease, he said.

Approved a monthly stipend of $1,500 retroactively for assistant Superintendent Brian Slamecka from January to July of this year. During that time Slamecka was assisting with district maintenance and elementary education matters, both of which are outside of his job description, said board member Al Vavro, who made the motion.
