Butler earns sweep

Butler’s push toward the Prospect League baseball playoffs received a huge boost over the weekend.

Playing at Champion City, the East Division-leading BlueSox managed a sweep of the second-place Kings by scores of 3-2 on Saturday and 6-3 on Sunday.

The Sox broke a 2-2 tie in Sunday’s game with four runs in the eighth inning. Calvin Scott clubbed a two-run home run and Stefan Mrkonja hit a two-run double.

Pavin Parks earned the win, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking one in eight innings.

James Meeker was credited with the save, striking out the side in the ninth.

Mrkonja, Meeker and Tanner Murphy each had two hits for Butler (29-20), which now holds a three-game lead over both the Kings and West Virginia.

On Saturday, the Sox received a clutch start from Jack Herzing.

Normally a reliever, Herzing worked seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked two.

Jamie Switalski and Butler High graduate Wyatt Daugherty both pitched a scoreless inning of relief, with Daugherty earning the save.

Murphy, Butler’s leadoff hitter, tallied two doubles with a run scored and one batted in. He is now batting .325 for the season.

Butler returns to action Tuesday at West Virginia.
