Park for pets completion delayed; work continues

Butler County maintenance worker Joe Magnani smooths out the concrete under a new pavilion at Jade's Dog Park as work progresses in Alameda Park in Butler Township on Wednesday.

BUTLER TWP — Alameda Park may not go to the dogs until next year.

Gary Pinkerton, director of county parks and recreation, said the opening of Jade's Dog Park in the county-owned recreation complex off Route 356 may not happen until 2018.

Pinkerton said the wet spring pushed back work on the 2.5-acre site.

“At this point, we'll be seeding in the fall,” he said.

After a delay last year waiting for topsoil, construction is back in full swing this year.

“We actually completed the installation of the shade shelter,” Pinkerton said.

He said the installation of electric and water service, a stone parking lot and plants in the rain garden is among the work to be completed.

“We just keep plugging forward,” Pinkerton said.

The dog park is named after the late pet Labrador of a couple whose donations kick-started the project.

The couple, who wished to remain anonymous, initially funded a $48,569 contract for such preliminary work as preparation of construction documents as well as a $30,000 contract for a sculptor to create a life-size bronze dog statue for the park.

Additional funding from the couple was added to other donations to pay the $152,100 contract with Plavchak Construction of Pittsburgh for concrete and other work on site.

Other funding came from an $87,000 state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant.
