Belgium golfer stops in Butler, earns Open spot

Escallon, Tardy pick up berths at BCC Monday

PENN TWP — She held the lead in the clubhouse for most of the day — and night.

And while Laura Gonzalez Escallon of Lonzee, Belgium, wound up settling for second in the U.S. Women’s Open Sectional Qualifying Monday at Butler Country Club, it was mission accomplished.

The fourth-year pro, in her first season on the LPGA Tour, is headed to the U.S. Women’s Open.

Escallon carded a 1-under-par 140 Monday at BCC to capture one of two available spots in the Women’s Open from this section. There are 20 other sectionnal qualifiers taking place throughout the United States through June 12.

“I chose this one because it fit in with my travel plans,” Escallon, 26, said. “I was coming right through here anyway.”

She competed in the LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship in Williamsburg, Va., over the weekend, shooting a 2-over-par in that tournament.

From there, Escallon drove to Butler. She is now on her way to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the next LPGA Tour stop.

“We got up here around 11 last night ... not much sleep,” she said.

Escallon will be competing in her first U.S. Women’s Open. The tourney is slated for July 13-16 at the Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey.

Also qualifying out of the BCC sectional was Bailey Tardy of Peachtree Corners, Ga. She shot a 2-under-par 140, including a 69 on the second 18 of the 36-hole event.

Escallon and Selena Costabile of Ontario, Canada, shared the lead at 70 after the first 18-hole round was completed. Costabile fell off the pace with a 75 on the second 18.

The qualifying got started 30 minutes late due to heavy rains Monday morning. The final golfers got off the course shortly before darkness fell.

Escallon will be playing in her first U.S. Women’s Open. This was the fourth time she’s tried qualifying through a sectional. She missed out by one stroke last year.

“The golf course here is beautiful,” she said. “I had never played here before, so I had to feel my way around. But it plays straight and the fairways were in outstanding condition.”

The lone Butler County golfer in the 74-player field — Aislynn Merling of Sarver — shot an 86-87-173.

Tying for third in the event were Costabile and Rachel Rohanna of Marianna at 145. They will serve as alternates for the U.S. Women’s Open.

Golfers from 16 states and five countries were among Monday’s field.
