Raiders explode for 15-2 triumph

Lacrosse team cruises in playoff opener at home

JACKSON TWP — Indiana's strategy was clear.

So was Seneca Valley's response.

In Monday night's WPIAL Class AAA girls lacrosse first-round playoff, the Indians looked to slow down SV's high-scoring offense by keeping possession with accurate passes.

Indiana won the opening faceoff and successfully executed its gameplan — for 1 minute and 40 seconds before a turnover put the Raiders in control. Three minutes later, Seneca Valley senior Karina Latsko scored the game's first goal.

It was the beginning of the Raiders' 15-2 blitzing of the Indians (8-8) at NexTier Stadium.

Early on, the Raiders turned the ball over a few times themselves, but by the mid-way point of the first half, their offense had completely taken over the game. Six different players scored for Seneca in the first half, which ended with the Raiders leading 12-1.

“Our plan was to come out and go hard at the net,” said Raider coach Katie Smolter. “I didn't like our attention to detail in the first five minutes, but after that I thought we played well.”

Latsko and Lauren Podolec both led the way with four goals while sophomore Madison Edkins scored three times.

“Our strategy in the second half was to possess on offense and get after it on defense with interceptions and groundballs and we did that,” said Smolter.

Also scoring for Seneca Valley were Olivia Rupert (2), Jennifer Listwak and Emily Meredith.

The Raiders missed the playoffs last year. Following a 13-7 defeat to Pine-Richland earlier this season, the team felt the need to hit the reset button.

“We had a team meeting and talked about what our goals were,” said Podolec. “We want to get (to the final) and we can do it as long as we work as a team.”

SV then reeled off seven straight wins before losing tight games to Pine-Richland (13-11) and Hampton (9-8) earlier this month, but Smolter found it easy to take positives from the losses.

“I was not concerned because they were both great games,” she said. “We battled really hard and showed we can fight in the face of adversity.”

The Raiders have earned a spot in the district's final eight and are in a good place mentally and physically.

The offense is averaging 14.6 goals per contest.

Senior goalie Elizabeth Hanks is in her second year as a starter and is playing well. She is supported by a defense led by senior defenders Caroline Foley and Erin Reiterman.

Seneca Valley (14-4) will face North Allegheny, a 12-11 winner over Shady Side Academy, in the quarterfinals Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.
