Police snag sleepy suspect near crime scene in S. Rock

He's charged with attempted burglary

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — The only thing a would-be burglar is accused of taking is 40 winks.

The alleged offender, police said, was caught napping on a bench near the crime scene early Sunday morning.

Officers snagged the sleeping suspect, a Jefferson Township teenager, who also appeared to have had too much to drink.

Zakariah Taylor Dovenspike, 18, was later arraigned on several charges including attempted burglary, a felony, before being released on his own recognizance.

State police were notified shortly before 1:30 a.m. of three males trying to break into the Allegheny Valley School's group home on Grove City Road in Slippery Rock Township, according to court documents.

The Allegheny Valley School is a private, no-profit agency that serves children, adults and seniors with mental retardation, physical handicaps, medical complications and behavior program needs.

While he tried to pull open the front door of the home, police said, Dovenspike yelled “DEA,” apparently referring to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Six residents and two employees were at the group home at the time, school officials said.

Police officers from Slippery Rock University and Slippery Rock heard the call go out on the radio and they were first to get there.

Dovenspike “was found asleep on a bench near the doors the individuals were trying to open,” according to a police affidavit.

When he awakened, he allegedly gave a bogus name to officers, who smelled alcohol on his breath. He was later taken to the barracks, where he gave his real name.

Charging documents did not indicate if authorities have any clues about the other two males reportedly seen with the defendant. The investigating officer could not be reached this morning.

In addition to attempted burglary, Dovenspike is charged with false identification to police, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

His preliminary hearing is set for May 24 at the office of District Judge William O'Donnell in Slippery Rock.
