Baby delivery, cardiac action recognized

5 firefighters' efforts honored

Five city firefighters were honored Thursday night for extraordinary on-the-job work during the past two months.

The honors for firefighters Robert Dockerty, Jeff Scott, Dean Selfridge, Scott Marshall and Jonathan Feicht come after two incidents — one in early March and the second in early April — that caught the eye of city councilwoman Kathy Kline.

On March 5, Dockerty and Scott were out on a call and ended up delivering a woman's baby — something Captain Ted Codispot said happens more frequently than people might expect. Codispot said the delivery went smoothly without any complications according to the department's records, and the woman and child were taken to Butler Memorial Hospital afterward.

For that work Kline presented the firefighters with stork pins on Thursday night — something usually bestowed by the union, she said.

The other incident — this one life threatening — occurred on April 2, when city resident Dwayne Moore came to the fire station complaining of not feeling well.

Moore is a frequent visitor to the station, Codispot said, and often stops by while riding his bike around town. On April 2, however, he complained of feeling ill, sat down, and lost consciousness shortly thereafter. Codispot said that Moore then went into cardiac arrest, causing Selfridge, Marshall and Feicht to spring into action.

The firefighters performed chest compressions on Moore until they could hook him up to an automated external defibrillator. Codispot said the trio worked for about five minutes to revive Moore, and he was subsequently taken to Butler Memorial Hospital.

On Thursday Moore presented the firefighters with citations from the city, and thanked them for working to revive him at the fire station.

“Thank you for taking the time to save me,” Moore told the firefighters. “I don't think anyone else would have.”
