Man found dead in city apartment

The cause of death of a 43-year-old bodybuilding enthusiast is still pending toxicology reports, authorities said.

Brian B. Abbott was found dead Saturday evening in a makeshift bedroom at his apartment on the 400 block of West North Street.

There was no sign of foul play and no evidence of illicit drug use.

“He was dead at least a week,” Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr said Monday.

Two friends had gone to Abbott’s apartment, which is above a Laundromat, out of concern for his welfare and safety.

“They hadn’t seen him for a week and a half,” said Butler police Deputy Chief David Adam.

One of the friends had a spare key and entered the apartment, finding the remains and notifying authorities.

An autopsy was conducted Sunday but a cause of death is still pending toxicology results, which could take several weeks.

Adam said the friends told investigators that Abbott was active in bodybuilding and apparently had a history of overusing creatine.

It was not known, however, if that had anything to do with his death.

A popular supplement among bodybuilders and athletes who are trying to add muscle mass or improve athletic ability, creatine is legal and can be ingested in powder or pill form.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate nutritional supplements and the long-term safety of creatine is not known.
