Store discount card leads to charges in purse theft

CRANBERRY TWP — A township man’s Giant Eagle Advantage Card was his undoing after he allegedly stole a woman’s purse that she left in a shopping cart at Giant Eagle.

Joseph Lucchini, 36, was charged with misdemeanor theft, receiving stolen property and access device fraud. The charges were waived to county court Friday.

Rose Brannan reported her purse was stolen to Cranberry Township Police around 4 p.m. May 9, 2016.

She said she left her purse in her shopping cart around 1 a.m. that day at the Giant Eagle in the Cranberry Mall plaza, according to police reports. She went back to look for the purse minutes later after realizing she didn’t have it, but couldn’t find it.

Cranberry Township police Officer Edward Horan got surveillance video and transaction receipts for Brannan and the next customer after her, who was identified by his Giant Eagle Advantage Card number as Lucchini, according to the affidavit.

The surveillance video shows Brannan walk into the entryway of the store and return her cart at 1:20 a.m., leaving her purse in the cart, police said. Video shows Lucchini is the next person to exit the store at 1:32 a.m.

Lucchini removes his grocery bags and returns his cart next to Brannan’s. He sees the purse, looks around a few times, then places his grocery bags in the cart on top of the victim’s purse and pushes the cart out of the store, police said.

Horan made contact with Lucchini by phone on May 13. Lucchini told police he had the purse and had intended on returning it, but had been too busy.

Horan retrieved the purse and returned it to Brannan on May 17, where she discovered she was missing $50 in Target gift cards and $28.42 from two Giant Eagle gift cards.

The gift cards were tracked by the bar code on the back, showing they were used May 10 at a Get Go in Cranberry. Video showed Lucchini using the victim’s gift cards, and he again used his Giant Eagle Advantage Card.

Lucchini will be arraigned in Butler County court April 25.
