Twp. man charged for taking lobster, steaks, ribs

BUTLER TWP — A suspected surf ’n’ turf shoplifter was unable to satisfy his apparent expensive appetite after allegedly being caught stealing steak and lobster from a township store.

Butler Township police Monday charged Michael J. Zawadski, 64, of Butler with trying to rustle up the merchandise valued at $405.

Authorities netted Zawadski on Feb. 12 not long after he appeared at the Walmart at the Butler Commons shopping plaza. A store employee first noticed him in the meat aisle.

He was seen stuffing a number of packages of steaks and ribs into insulated freezer bags that he had taken from the store, police said.

The defendant soon moved to the freezer section, according to court documents, where he reeled in boxes of lobster tails and lobster claws. He placed the seafood into the bags, too.

But Zawadski was hooked as he left the store with the unpaid-for merchandise. The store employee, police said, caught him with 33 items.

He admitted the would-be theft, documents said, telling authorities he “was going to resell everything for money.”

Zawadski is facing a first-degree misdemeanor charge of retail theft. His preliminary hearing is March 30.

The store, meanwhile, advised the suspect he was no longer permitted there. But that didn’t stop him, police said.

Less than a week later, he was back Feb. 18 at the same Walmart. For that return trip, police cited him for defiant trespass.
