Tina Kramer

GREENVILLE — Thiel College senior Tina Kramer of Butler, was named a Thiel College Student of the Month for February.

Kramer is a double major in psychology and English with a secondary education certification. She is a Thiel Presidential Scholar and is a five-time dean’s list awardee.

She is a member of Sigma Alpha Pi national society of leadership and success, Pi Nu Epsilon national music honor society, Kappa Delta Pi international education honor society, Psi Chi international psychology honor society, Les Lauriers service honorary society and Lambda Sigma national honor society.

She is vice president of Sigma Tau Delta international English honorary society and will serve as Alpha Chi president in the next academic year.

She is co-editor-in-chief of the Thielensian student newspaper, vice president of the Thiel College Choir and part of the Thiel Student Support Network, Ultimate Frisbee Club and the English Club.

After graduation, Kramer will pursue graduate studies in psychology and counseling.

Kramer, a 2014 graduate of Butler High School, is the daughter of Tom Kramer and the late June Kramer, of Butler.

Isabella Wallance of Freeport recently entered La Roche College’s CheM Scholar Program, after being given a National Science Foundation (NSF) scholarship.

Wallance and 20 other students were chosen due to their academic talent and the need for financial aid to see that talent developed further.

The students excelled in mathematics and chemistry in high school, demonstrated promise of excelling in their chosen majors and have diversified, well-rounded interests.

Wallance will have the chance to design new, hands-on learning kits through ChemSOLVE (chemistry student-operated laboratory venture) and will be individually mentored by alumni, faculty and professionals in the industry.

Natrona Heights — Saint Joseph High School students participated in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Region 7 Meeting at Duquesne University.

Receiving first awards were freshman Spencer Brackett, sophomore Tom Preston and sophomore Julia Singleton, all of Butler. Receiving a second award was freshman Maximillian Wolfe of Sarver.

Brackett also received the American Chemical Society Dr. James Manner Award for Excellence in Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Award for Studies in the Field of Science Related to Civil Engineering.

JACKSON TWP — Brianna Buccini, Rachel Spear, Nate Craig, David Choi, Ananya Rao, Zach Garcia, Chris Helmsen, Jackie Ko and Tanya Gupta, the Seneca Valley Middle School MATHCOUNTS team, won the 2017 MATHCOUNTS Midwestern Pennsylvania regional competition held at Grove City College.

In addition to the team placing first, Seneca Valley Middle School took six of the top ten individual places, and the team qualified for the state competition in Harrisburg.

David Choi, grade 8, received a team award and first-place individual.

Zach Garcia, grade 8, received a team award and second-place individual.

Chris Helmsen, grade 7, received a team award and third-place individual.

Rachel Spear, grade 7, received a team award and fourth-place individual.

Jackie Ko, grade 8, received ninth-place individual.

Nate Craig, a sixth-grade student at Evans City Middle School, received 10th-place individual.

MATHCOUNTS is a competition series that requires outstanding math knowledge and problem-solving skills.
