Craig, Hegedus key KC girls victory
Mackenzie Craig scored 20 points as the Karns City girls basketball team downed Knoch 50-35 Tuesday night.
Emily Hegedus added 14 points for the Gremlins. Hegedus, a junior guard, is just four points shy of 1,000 in her career.
Alyssa Gibson added 10 points for Karns City.
Craig, Hegedus and Gibson each also had eight rebounds.
Casey Kretzer and Gabby Fennell each scored 10 points for Knoch.
Karns City will host Keystone for a varsity-only game today at 7 p.m. It is also Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
Freeport 52, Shady Side Academy 44 — Jenna Manke scored 16 points to lead the Yellowjackets.
Sidney Shemanski chipped in 14 points as Freeport used a 15-4 advantage in the third quarter to salt the game away.
Boys Basketball
Payton Skalos scored 17 points as Seneca Valley won this big section game over Shaler, 57-53, to stay in the playoff hunt.
Chris Hart added 14 points for Seneca Valley (11-8, 4-5).
Patrick Uher and Skalos helped secure the victory with four free throws each in the fourth quarter.
Skalos also hit four 3-pointers.
Montour 83, Mars 70 — Cade Hetzler paced the Planets with 17 points, but a poor third quarter doomed Mars to this section loss.
Ben Lewis added 15 points, Robby Carmody 13 and Michael Carmody 12 for Mars (11-8, 6-3).
The Planets led 43-41 at the half, but were outscored 24-11 in the third quarter and never recovered.
Moon 59, Knoch 41 — The Knights led 28-27 at the half, but struggled in the final two quarters in this section setback.
Knoch (10-7, 3-6) managed just five points in the third quarter and fell behind 41-33 after three quarters and couldn’t mount a comeback.
Grove City 65, Hickory 31 — Logan Lutz scored 15 points as the Eagles continued to roll.
Martin Beatty added 12 points and Isaac Thrasher pitched in 10 for Grove City (14-4, 10-0), which limited the Hornets to just seven points in the first half.
Beatty also added nine rebounds and Kameron Patterson chipped in five assists for the Eagles.
Freeport 66, Yough 50 — Ben Beale hit for 17 points as the Yellowjackets built a huge lead and cruised to move into first place in the section.
Gavin Skradski added 14 points and Evan Schaffhauser 11 for Freeport (13-6, 8-1), which led 60-27 after three quarters.
Summit Academy 97, Serra Catholic 87 — Colby Jaggon scored 23 points as the Knights clinched a playoff spot with this section win.
Tyree Thomas added 15 points, Tyree Gholston 14, Tyler Harrison 13 and Steven Pigford 10 for Summit Academy (7-10, 6-4).
Rifle
Luke Montag, Alexandra Arbanas, Matt Corlew, Brendan Lefevre, Cami Tack, Patrick Atchison and Michael Rugaber all shot 100s in Butler’s 799-57x to 795-57x win over Plum.
