GC's Santom becomes 2-sport star

Hannah Santom
Senior considers playing volleyball, basketball in college next year

GROVE CITY — Not long ago, Hannah Santom’s college plans didn’t include playing a single sport.

Now, she’s contemplating participating in two at the next level.

Santom, a Grove City High senior, has had breakout seasons on both the volleyball and basketball courts for the Eagles.

And colleges are noticing.

“It’s very humbling to say the least,” Santom said. “I’m definitely blessed to have athletic ability, but the hard work and dedication you put in through the season and in the offseason does pay off.”

Santom was a force as a setter for the volleyball team. This winter, she has carried over her strong play to the basketball court, where she’s averaging 18.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

She’s also recording healthy steal and assist numbers for Grove City.

“A lot of coaches say this player is a hard worker and they’re telling the truth,” said Grove City coach Chris Burtch. “But from the first day of practice, Hannah’s worked with a purpose. She’s worked really hard on her post moves, on her ball handling, on being a better shooter. There’s a fine line between a good high school player and a great, really productive high school player, and she’s crossed that line.”

Santom, a 5-foot-10 forward, has also been remarkably consistent.

Only twice in 14 games has she been held to fewer than 10 points, and in those games she scored eight and nine.

She hit for a career-high 31 in a win earlier this month over Meadville.

“She has this incredible ability to work through adversity,” Burtch said. “She doesn’t get frustrated. She’s scored 18 points per game, but it’s not like we’re going out of the way and saying we need to get the ball in her hands.”

Santom takes pride in that ability to be reliable.

She admitted she did not expect to have the impact that she is having this season.

As a junior, she averaged 11 points and five rebounds per game.

“I was just expecting to play as hard as I could,” Santom said. “I just wanted to enjoy the season. There’s five seniors and we’ve all played together since middle school. We just wanted to do our best in our last year.”

Grove City’s 7-8 record is a bit deceiving.

Three of those losses have come against teams with a combined 29-5 record as of Thursday and two of them against WPIAL 5A teams.

“We’ve had some gut-wrenching losses,” Santom said. “But we see that as an opportunity to learn.”

Santom has had plenty of support.

Abby Fulkerson has emerged as a star at point guard and has also added some scoring punch, and Abby Biddle has played well as a third dangerous option in the offense.

It makes Santom’s job that much easier.

“I love my teammates,” Santom said. “They’ve worked just as hard as I have and they have the same goals and passion that I do.”

Westminster College has been on Santom’s radar for quite some time for volleyball. It is now in the mix as well for basketball.

Santom said she has had other schools contact her to play both.

Quite a change from a few short years ago.

“This is the first year I’ve been recognized for my season as a player and it definitely changed my mindset,” Santom said. “My goals have changed dramatically.”
