A resolution against discrimination failed to gain city council's approval

A resolution against discrimination proposed by Butler Mayor Tom Donaldson was voted down Thursday at a city council meeting.

The resolution in part, states, “Now therefore, be it resolved by the City of Butler Council, that we as a community show proper respect for the dignity of all members of our community, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religious belief, or conscience so that there remains adequate space for diverse beliefs and action and so that people of goodwill can all enjoy the freedom and the blessings of liberty afforded to them by the constitutions of the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”

The vote was deadlocked at 2-2, lacking the majority vote the resolution needed to be passed.

Donaldson and councilman Kenny Bonus voted in favor of the resolution, while councilwoman Kathy Kline and councilman Corey Roche voted against it.

Councilman Michael Walter abstained from voting. He said he wasn't convinced now is the time to vote on the resolution, with the anti-discrimination ordinance still pending.

Kline and Roche each said the resolution was premature and does not solve the issue of discrimination. Bonus said the resolution is a statement that would show the council is against discrimination.

Donaldson expressed disappointment that the resolution was not passed and said he voted for the resolution because he is against discrimination.
